The Commune of Sant'Antonio Abate is situated in the lowland overhung by the Lattari Mountains and extends in its central part and in that western in the hinterland stabiese (Ager Stabianus) and on its own oriental slope in the sour nocerino-sarnese.
The administrative origins are recent. Sant'Antonio Abate is become common in 1925, detaching only formally itself in 1929 from the Commune of Letters (of which has been a fraction in precedence).
From different studies it has emerged that the territory abatese has been inhabited, since remote epochs, from native populations and of Indo-European origins, among which the Opicis, the Oscis, the Etruschis, the Greek, the Sannitis and the Romans. The presence of this last ones is well documented from the rustic Villa of Casa Salese, recovered in 1974, going up again to the age augustea-tiberiana and abandoned with a lot of probability following the eruption of the Vesuvius of the 79 d.C.
As it regards the following history, of particular importance has been the final clash of the war Gothic- Greek fret (535-553 d.Cs.) happened during the battle of the Mountains Lattari (October 552-February 553 d.Cs.), that has decreed the departure of the Goths and king Teia's death, very probably happened really in territory abatese and whose body, is narrated, was thrown in a situated well in the place to everything today denominated Well of the Goths, to the border among Sant'Antonio Abate and Angri.
After a long and dark period lasted approximately up to the year Thousand, the territory abatese has known then a gradual economic resumption thanks above all to the progressive reclamation of the marshy zones, once very wide, near which around the XV century is had the birth of the first farms that have constituted the native nucleus of the ancient one "Suburb of Sant'Antuono." Among the artistic and architectural testimonies they occupy a position of prominence the Church of Sant'Antonio in Vienne, better note as Congregates of the Immaculate, container two frescos of the painter Galizia of Nocera and the parish Church of Sant'Antonio Abate, erect in the eight hundred and where a pulpit of appreciated wood they are preserved.
From its foundation the common abatese is developed then in gradual way, founding its wealth upon the agriculture and then on the activities to it connected. Beginning from halves the '90 the economy of Sant'Antonio Abate is assembled above all then on the industrial sector of the transformation of the tomato and the specialized crops in greenhouses that have also involved the development of the activities of the tertiary one.
Its geographical position makes the territory abatese a good point of departure for the principal tourist destinations both of the province in Naples (Pompeii and the communes of the Peninsula sorrentina) and of the province of Salerno (from the city chief town to the different communes of the Amalfi Coast).
You must be added that during every year they are developed to Sant'Antonio Abate different events that culture reflects, the traditions, the religiousness, the spirit of solidarity and friendship of the abatesis. They are examples meaningful of it:
